Glenorchy, New Zealand
One of New Zealand’s last frontier towns at the northern head of Lake Wakatipu and bordered on two sides by National Parks, this tiny village huddles against a backdrop of rugged high country, beautiful mountains, glacier fed rivers and ancient beech forests. Just 45 minutes from the bustling resort community of Queenstown is a quaint destination offering peace and solitude at the banks of Lake Wakatipu. Blanket Bay has been touted by Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic and actor Sir Ian McKellan as one of the best places from which to discover the beauty of New Zealand.
Why Blanket Bay?
Just 12 rooms are available at Blanket Bay, ensuring your stay is as relaxed and intimate as desired. Five lakeside Lodge Rooms, three Lodge Suites and four spacious Chalet Suites are each bedecked with sumptuous furnishings and oversized king beds, featuring private terraces and spectacular views of the lake and nearby Humboldt Mountains. Guests will find exquisite granite counter tops and separate bath and showers in the comfortable en suite bathrooms. Suites also enjoy the luxury of large stone fireplaces and sizable walk-in closets.
Amazing natural wonders are only a helicopter ride away at Blanket Bay. Milford Sound is a sight not to be missed during your visit. Anglers are guided by expert fishing guides to the most remote and peaceful fishing spots in the Greenstone Valley, where ample trout await. Adventurous guests will thrill at the opportunity to hop from a helicopter and ski down Mt. Earnslaw Glacier. From a quiet horseback ride to a speedy mountain biking tour, the experiences in the diverse surrounds are endless.
Blanket Bay offers heliskiing to suit a wide range of skiing and snowboarding abilities. Each heliski option has been carefully designed to offer a great degree of flexibility, allowing everyone to experience the tranquility, freedom and exhilaration of heliskiing.
Contrary to the perception that heliskiing is only reserved for the extreme skier/boarder, with New Zealand's unique geography you can heli-ski on moderate terrain (ski field blue run equivalent) with your own private helicopter right from Blanket Bay's doorstep. The average Southern Alps’ heli-ski run is 750 vertical meters.
