The Rise of the Dutch Golden Age
Walk into a genuine piece of Amsterdam history, in former homes of famous Dutch Admirals dating back to the 17th century. Timeless elegance with cream-colored walls, wooden ceiling beams, warm autumn colors and a subtle mix of classic and contemporary furnishings; an elegant and soothing atmosphere in which to enjoy privacy, refinement and absolute comfort. The well-appointed Royal Suite is located on the third floor of a former canal house and overlooks the hotel’s opulent courtyard. Contemporary design combined with monumental wood beamed ceilings create a historical home away from home atmosphere. Featuring a magnificent king-size bedroom with an upstairs private balcony, and a spacious bathroom fraught with Hermès amenities. A living room with lounge and dining area adjacent to a small library with a working desk create the perfect setting for a business or leisure stay. Approximate size: 100 square meters / 1076 square feet.
Suite Talk Q&A
- What would be your advice for a first-time guest visiting? One of my favorite suggestions is to let the Butler or Concierge take interested guests along for a bike ride or a stroll in the surroundings. Accompanying them to ‘De Drie Fleschjes’, the oldest tasting venue of Amsterdam, is my favorite. Telling guests the history of one of our legendary visitors, Michiel de Ruyter, who also was present during the opening of this typical Dutch cafe in 1650, is really stepping back in time. The hotel has its own ‘The Grand Jenever Barrel’ including the typical jenever glasses, so to raise the glass with the guests and let them taste a unique piece of Amsterdam is an experience they will never forget!
- How would you like to be remembered? Since 1578 we have welcomed celebrated authors, royals, ambassadors and heads of state. From 15th-century convent to royal lodgings to Dutch Admiralty headquarters to the city hall of Amsterdam. Guests staying with me will experience five-star luxury in a unique “Amsterdam” ambiance, furnished with French elegance and grandeur.
- Who was your all-time favorite guest? If only walls could talk…they would surely have extraordinary tales to tell. Of 16th century princes and queens on diplomatic missions, and the 17th century admirals commanding launches for distant lands. Not to mention stories of eager artists and craftsmen, pursuing a vision as they decorated Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. The majestic Grand, overflowing with history but vibrantly modern. A supreme hotel experience for guests from oceans away, or some just across the canal.
