Bet Your Bottom Dollar You Lose the Blues in Chicago

Located just off Michigan Avenue in the former McGraw-Hill building, The Gwen features an Art deco inspired décor that pays homage to pioneer Chicago sculptor Gwen Lux. Chicago-based design firm Simeone Deary incorporated elements of Lux’s artistic style into the refreshed spaces—each bedroom is adorned with a graphic reproduction of Lux’s sculptural work.

The one-of-a-kind, 1,400 square foot Gwen Lux Suite offers two private bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms with granite accents and an oversized glass shower. Perfect for entertaining, the suite includes a dining room and separate living room, wet bar, and guest powder room. The Gwen Lux Suite houses two private outdoor balconies, including a 1,100 square foot private terrace overlooking the Magnificent Mile.

What is your biggest indulgence in captivating new guests? As they say, location is everything! The Gwen is located in one of the most bustling parts of Chicago, in the city’s most popular shopping district. Guests to The Gwen Lux Suite can also enjoy private butler service or a visit from the Prohibition Porter, our roving cocktail cart. The mobile,
leather-bound cocktail cart can be delivered right to the suite and is manned by a member of our bar team. Guests can work with mixologists to create complex cocktails tableside that showcase the craft of cocktail making.

What sets you apart from other suites in this city? Of course, Chicago is a big city, with plenty of deluxe suites, but I am a little bit biased. I have the largest private patio in neighborhood, and boast two guestrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. When it comes to planning a getaway with a group, or with that special someone, there is simply no better choice.

Is there a famous name, a particular street or monument that you most identify with? What inspired your style? I obviously have to go with my namesake, the great sculptor and artist, Gwen Lux, whose Art deco style greatly influenced my look and design. In fact, a graphic print of her gazelle sculpture has been added into each of my bedrooms. Gwen’s artistry is evident throughout the entire hotel, from the gold accents in the lobby to her adequately named Gwen Lux cocktail at the property’s bar, Upstairs at The Gwen.

What would be your advice for a first-time guest visiting?
As much as I would love for you to stay in bed all day, I would encourage you to get out and explore the great city of Chicago. Have some drinks and appetizers at Upstairs at The Gwen before heading out to take a bite out of the city, which was just named Conde Nast Traveler’s “Best Restaurant City in America.” If you’re more of a shopper yourself, The Gwen is connected to The Shops at Northbridge via an indoor
skyway
and you don’t even have to go outside! Nordstrom is our neighborhood department store, and one of our favorite stores in the city. They even have a spa for those looking to recover from a day of fashion hunting.

What is your suite motto? I follow the motto of "Old Blue Eyes" by Frank Sinatra, “Bet your bottom dollar you lose the blues in Chicago.” It’s important that all our guests experience the kind of Midwestern hospitality that Chicago is known for, and that they leave with smile on their face.
